The Closer to Nature Forestry and Biodiversity Conservation Thematic Working Group (TWG) strengthens forest advisory capacities by increasing knowledge and awareness of closer-to-nature forestry practices, promoting biodiversity conservation, and supporting their practical implementation across different European forest contexts.

About

The Sustainable Forest Management & Closer-to-Nature Forestry Thematic Working Group (TWG) brings together researchers, forest advisors, forest owners, policymakers, contractors, National Contact Points, and forestry practitioners from across Europe to exchange scientific knowledge, practical experience, and successful examples of closer-to-nature forestry (CNF) and uneven-aged forest management. Through webinars, workshops, and networking activities, the TWG aims to strengthen forest advisory services by improving understanding of closer-to-nature forestry, enhancing knowledge transfer from research and demonstration sites, and supporting the practical implementation of biodiversity-friendly, climate-resilient, and sustainable forest management practices that balance biodiversity conservation with productive and resilient forestry.

Key focus areas

Knowledge exchange on closer-to-nature forestry, including EU Guidelines, research results, demonstration sites, and available knowledge repositories
Practical implementation of closer-to-nature forestry and uneven-aged forest management, including demonstration sites and transferable best practices
Economic aspects of closer-to-nature forestry, including wood quality, financing mechanisms, grants and subsidies, to promote Closer-to-nature forestry
Policy dialogue, barrier identification, and cross-regional cooperation to support the wider adoption of closer-to-nature forestry across Europe
