FORADVISE International Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation & Forest Protection

This October, the FORADVISE community will meet in Farnham, Surrey, UK, for the project’s first International Workshop, dedicated to Climate Change Adaptation & Forest Protection. Taking place on 14–15 October 2026, the two-day event will bring together forest advisors, experts and practitioners from across Europe to exchange experiences, discuss real-world challenges and explore how advisory services can better support forests facing increasing climate pressures. Hosted by Forest Research and the Forestry Commission, the workshop will offer a practical space for learning from different European contexts and strengthening collaboration across the forest advisory community.

Learning from real-world experience

A central part of the workshop will be the exchange of climate change adaptation case studies from across Europe. Participants will share examples of effective advisory practice addressing challenges such as drought, wildfire, wind damage, pests and diseases, as well as questions around native and non-native tree species, diversification and the future resilience of broadleaf species. The focus will not only be on the measures themselves, but also on how advice is delivered, which actors are involved and what lessons can be transferred to other regions and forestry contexts.

Bringing different perspectives into the discussion

The programme will also feature poster sessions, opening the discussion to topics such as decision-support tools and modelling, the development of advisory capacity and systems, and economic mechanisms or incentives that can encourage the uptake of adaptive forest management practices. By combining practical examples with peer exchange and discussion, the workshop will give participants the opportunity to compare approaches, identify common challenges and explore solutions that can strengthen forest advisory practice across Europe.

forest advisors

The Farnham workshop marks an important step in FORADVISE’s wider knowledge-sharing activities, connecting experience from different countries and turning it into practical learning for the European forest advisory community. As climate-related pressures become increasingly complex, these exchanges can help advisors navigate uncertainty, learn from one another and support more resilient forest management.
